Propose in San Francisco

Fog, hills, and one unmistakable bridge.
The Golden Gate Bridge spanning the bay under a clear sky
WHY HERE

San Francisco's hills mean a short walk can take you from street level to a sweeping city view. The Golden Gate Bridge is the obvious choice, but several hilltop parks rival it without the crowds.

Best time to go

September and October are locally known as the city's best weather, warmer and clearer than summer.

Weather to expect

Summer fog frequently rolls in over the bridge and western neighborhoods by afternoon. Mornings and early evenings tend to be clearer.

If plans change

The Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, or a window table at a restaurant along the Embarcadero.

The best spots to propose in San Francisco

01

Battery Spencer

Marin Headlands

A clifftop viewpoint on the bridge's north side with a straight-on view of the Golden Gate and the city skyline behind it.

Tip: This spot is well known to photographers, so arrive early for a clear spot along the railing.

02

Twin Peaks

central San Francisco

The city's highest viewpoint, with a 360-degree panorama over nearly every neighborhood and both bridges on a clear day.

Tip: It is often windy and can be noticeably colder than downtown. Bring a layer even in summer.

03

Lands End, Eagle's Point

western San Francisco

A rugged coastal trail with cypress trees framing views of the bridge, the ocean, and the old Sutro Baths ruins below.

Tip: The trail has uneven and sometimes narrow sections, so comfortable shoes matter more than they might elsewhere.

04

Palace of Fine Arts

Marina District

A grand domed rotunda beside a quiet lagoon, built for the 1915 World's Fair and one of the city's most romantic architectural settings.

Tip: Early morning light on the dome and its reflection in the lagoon is especially striking.
