Propose in Rome

Two thousand years of romance to borrow from.
The Colosseum lit up at dusk in Rome
WHY HERE

Rome rewards proposing somewhere with history in the frame, and the hilltop terraces above the city center offer that without the crowds at street level.

Best time to go

April, May, September, and October bring comfortable temperatures. Midsummer in Rome is hot and heavily visited.

Weather to expect

Summer afternoons can be intensely hot. Plan outdoor moments for morning or evening and carry water.

If plans change

A quiet trattoria with an outdoor-facing window table, or the covered cloister of a smaller church away from the main tourist routes.

The best spots to propose in Rome

01

Colosseum exterior at dusk

Piazza del Colosseo

The ancient amphitheater lit from within as the sky darkens, viewable for free from the surrounding piazza.

Tip: The south side of the piazza has a clearer view with fewer tour groups than the main entrance side.

02

Gianicolo (Janiculum Hill)

above Trastevere

Widely considered Rome's best sunset viewpoint, with the entire historic center and its domes spread out below.

Tip: Arrive at least 20 minutes before sunset to get a spot along the terrace wall.

03

Pincio Terrace

above Piazza del Popolo

A balustraded terrace overlooking Piazza del Popolo with St. Peter's dome visible in the distance.

Tip: Reach it through the Villa Borghese gardens for a quieter walk up than the direct street stairs.

04

Trevi Fountain, early morning

Rione Trevi

The famous baroque fountain is genuinely beautiful, but only peaceful outside of daytime hours.

Tip: Visit at or before sunrise. By mid-morning this piazza is one of the most crowded in the city.
