What should you say when you propose?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Say what you love about your partner, mention a specific shared memory, and describe the future you want together. Then ask the question clearly. A brief message in your own words is easier to deliver sincerely than a speech written to sound impressive.

How do you begin?

Start with one detail your partner will recognize: a small act of kindness, an ordinary ritual, or a moment you felt understood. Explain what it means to you. Specific memories usually sound more personal than a list of romantic adjectives.

How do you connect the past to the future?

Say what you want to keep building together. Focus on commitments you can honestly make, such as listening, sharing decisions, or showing up for each other. Avoid promises that neither person could reasonably guarantee.

How do you finish?

Use a direct question and pause for the response. You can keep a note if you are worried about forgetting. If you become emotional, stop for a breath rather than trying to rush through every planned sentence.

What should you do next?

  • Choose one real memory.
  • Name the future you want together.
  • End with a clear question.
